SONG REVIEW

Hail from the Harlem

By Istiaque Ahmed

Are you always sitting in a café waiting those extra hours for your beloved? Are you having a hard time maintaining those dreamy eyes for her? Are you tired of those traffic jam excuses? Are you looking for answers? And is your relationship seems like it has hit the 40’s? Then the song ‘Is you is or is you ain’t my baby’ by Louis Jordan is the perfect elixir for your ears.

is-you-is-1
The song starts with a whining and complaining of a lover whose beloved is always late. The insecurity of a lover and clichéd judgment about women is presented through melodious jazz tunes and sophisticated lyrics written by Jordan and Billy Austin. The song was released in 1944 and topped the US folk charts. It also was peaked number 2 for 3 weeks in the US pop chart and number 3 in the R&B charts. This was Jordan’s second and last country chart no 1. ‘Is you is or is you ain’t’ is a dialect first recorded in the humorous black dialect fictions of Octavas Roy Cohen in the 1920’s. The song has been covered numerous times but most people remember it through the TOM & JERRY episode SOLID SERENADE where Tom was seen singing for the first time.
So throw away the coffee mug, grab a saxophone and start singing this upon your beloved’s arrival. You will eventually get to know if she is or if she ain’t.
