Mithun Chakma murder protest

DU:  On Sunday, January 7, Anti-Imperialist Student’s Union demonstrated a protest in University of Dhaka campus demanding the detention and trial of the murderers of Mithun Chakma, a think-tank of Jumma politics.

Jatiya Mukti Council and United Peoples Democratic Front- UPDF leader Mithun Chakma was murdered in Khagrachari on Wednesday, January 3. He was allegedly abducted by activists of a new party formed with a faction of UPDF. The masked men left his body with multiple gunshot wounds. He was later declared dead at a local hospital.

Mithun Chakma also help the chair for Pahari Chatra Parishad and Ganatantrik Juba Forum.

UPDF has tried to file a murder case in this regard; however, the police have refused to take a case from anyone but the deceased’s family. This action is seen by the UPDF leaders as an attempt of the authority to back up the killers.

Chakma had a very promising academic portfolio and denied a lucrative teaching offer at his alma mater, University of Dhaka and returned to CHT, to involve in politics wholeheartedly.

He had been a promising politician and a strong voice for the Jumma people.


Song-procession demanding JUCSU

JU: On Thursday, January 11, Jahangirnagar University Shankskritik Sangshad brought out a song-procession in demand of student’s union election of the university.

The procession started around 11.30 in the morning from Amar Ekushe of the premises and ended in Murad Chattar, after scouting different roads.

Mikha Piregu, president to Sangshad said that they will remain on the streets, with activities, till the authority rolls the polls. He also said that university cannot run without conforming to the 1973 university order. Senate polls have already been completed. In this circumstance, we demand that the authority should take actions to complete the students’ union election.

JU has seen, since its establishment in 1970, only nine Student’s Union election.

For the last 26 years, Jahangirnagar University has seen no students’ union election.

Chatra Union JU president Imran Nadim, Sankskritik Jote’s general secretary Nazmul Hasan and left-wing student activists have participated in the programme.


Hamdard: On Tuesday, January 9, Hamdard University of Bangladesh organised a Bengali Poush and Pitha Festival in their Gazipur permanent premises.

EU: On Wednesday, January 10, Eastern University has inaugurated the classes at their Savar permanent campus.
